Living in Alpharetta, GA:
a relocation & lifestyle guide.

People move to Alpharetta for a specific combination that’s hard to find in one place: a walkable, small-city lifestyle, one of Georgia’s strongest school systems, and a corporate corridor with 700+ technology companies — all a short GA-400 drive from the rest of metro Atlanta.

That mix is why so many of my clients arrive here on a corporate or executive relocation from California, New York, or Texas, often sight-unseen. After three decades guiding buyers into this market, here’s the honest picture of what it’s like to live in Alpharetta — the work, the lifestyle, the schools, where people actually choose to live, what it costs, and how a move from out of state really works.

The Work

A corridor of 700+ tech companies.

Alpharetta is the heart of North Atlanta’s technology corridor — more than 700 technology companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Cisco, and ADP. Corporate relocations from companies like Microsoft, ADP, and Google continue to fuel demand, particularly among executive-level buyers, and the correlation between corporate growth and home value is one of this market’s most durable fundamentals.

Proximity to that corridor varies by neighborhood, but the region is knit together by GA-400, which is accessible from downtown in under 10 minutes. For the frequent business traveler, Hartsfield-Jackson is 40–50 minutes away; Buckhead and Midtown are 25–35.

The Lifestyle

Avalon, downtown, and a trail between them.

What sets Alpharetta apart from a typical suburb is that it’s genuinely walkable in two places. Avalonis one of the Southeast’s premier mixed-use destinations — world-class dining, Whole Foods, boutique retail, a luxury hotel and cinema, rooftop bars, and a year-round calendar of events. Downtown Alpharettais the counterpoint: Canton Street’s locally owned restaurants, weekly events, the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre, and tree-lined streets you can actually stroll.

The Alpha Loop, Alpharetta’s celebrated trail network, now threads pedestrian-friendly connective tissue between the two. It’s the rare North Atlanta address where daily life can happen on foot.

The Schools

Among Georgia’s strongest.

Schools are a primary reason families choose Alpharetta. Cambridge High School ranks #1 in Georgia and Alpharetta High School ranks #3, and the broader Fulton County system serving the city is highly rated across the board.

One important caveat I give every relocating family: school zoning is assigned by address, not by city— two homes on the same street can feed different schools. Confirming the zone for a specific property before you tour, not after, prevents the most common relocation misstep. If schools are central to your search, my North Fulton school districts guide walks through the zones in detail.

The Cost

What your money buys.

Luxury homes in Alpharetta typically begin around $1M and can exceed $5M, with entry-level luxury starting near $700K. As a rough guide: $1M–$1.5M buys newer construction on smaller lots near downtown and Avalon; $1.5M–$3M buys larger homes on private lots in top school and golf communities; and $3M–$5M+ reaches estate properties and custom builds.

Buyers relocating from California, New York, and Texas are often surprised by how much more space, privacy, and lifestyle Alpharetta offers at these price points — and Georgia property taxes are significantly lower than states like New Jersey and New York. It has also been a durable investment: Alpharetta homes have appreciated at roughly 6%+ annually over the past decade.

Moving to Alpharetta

How an out-of-state move actually works.

Most of my out-of-state and executive-relocation clients start the entire process virtually. As a BHHS Relocation Specialist with 30+ years in this market, I begin with a private consultation and needs assessment, then narrow the field to two or three communities rather than ten — because the right community recommendation does most of the work.

From there, market education, virtual and FaceTime tours, and even remote offer execution mean many clients only fly in once, for a single curated in-person tour. Executive and corporate relocations are supported through Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices’ national relocation network. Common Questions

Living in Alpharetta, answered.

What is it like to live in Alpharetta, GA?
Alpharetta is a North Atlanta suburb that lives like a small city. Its center of gravity is walkable luxury — Avalon, a revitalized downtown, and the Alpha Loop trail connecting them — wrapped around one of the region's strongest job markets and school systems. You get world-class dining and retail, top-ranked Fulton County schools, and GA-400 access to the rest of metro Atlanta, without giving up space or a residential feel.
Is Alpharetta a good place to live for families and executives?
It's built for both. Families are drawn by top-ranked Fulton County schools — Cambridge High ranks #1 in Georgia and Alpharetta High #3 — plus swim/tennis communities, parks, and a walkable downtown. Executives are drawn by the corridor's 700+ technology companies and quick GA-400 access. School zoning is assigned by address, not by city — two homes on the same street can feed different schools — so it's always worth confirming the zone for a specific property before you tour.
How long is the commute from Alpharetta to Atlanta?
From downtown Alpharetta, GA-400 is accessible in under 10 minutes, which puts Atlanta’s business corridor within reach. Buckhead and Midtown are about 25–35 minutes via GA-400, and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is roughly 40–50 minutes — a real advantage for frequent business travelers. Avalon and downtown sit about five minutes apart.

Alpharetta anchors a corridor of more than 700 technology companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Cisco, and ADP. Corporate relocations from companies like Microsoft, ADP, and Google continue to fuel demand, particularly among executive-level buyers — and that correlation between corporate growth and home value is one of the market’s most durable fundamentals.

I’m moving to Alpharetta from out of state — how do I start?
Most out-of-state buyers start entirely virtually. As a BHHS Relocation Specialist with 30+ years in the market, Jeni runs a private consultation and needs assessment, narrows the search to two or three communities rather than ten, and handles market education, virtual and FaceTime tours, and even remote offer execution — so many clients only visit Atlanta once, for a single curated in-person tour. The Bottom Line

Thinking about the move? Start with a conversation.

Alpharetta rewards buyers who match the right neighborhood to how they actually want to live — walkable and social, gated and private, or family swim-and-tennis in a specific school zone. That’s the part I help relocating families and executives get right before they ever board a plane.
